The Two Monsoons: When to Visit Sri Lanka Month-by-Month
Sri Lanka is an extraordinary year-round destination because its weather is dictated by two opposing monsoon cycles: the Yala Monsoon and the Maha Monsoon.
From December to April, the South and West coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota, Colombo) and the Central Highlands (Nuwara Eliya, Ella) enjoy dry, sun-drenched skies and calm sapphire seas perfect for blue whale watching and beach escapes.
From May to September, while the southwest sees tropical showers, the East Coast (Trincomalee, Passikudah, Arugam Bay) and the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Minneriya) enter their absolute prime sunshine seasons.
Field Notes & Etiquette
- •Peak Leopard sightings in Yala: February to July during the dry season waterhole gatherings.
- •Whale watching window on the south coast: November through April.
- •Highland tea picking season: January to April yields the finest aromatic high-grown leaves.
